Garry's Mod Server Not Showing Up

The server starts, you can join it, and nobody else can find it. Paste your server.cfg, the console output from startup, or both. This checks the handful of things that actually keep a Garry's Mod server off the browser, in the order they are worth checking. Everything stays in your browser.

Careful: server.cfg holds rcon_password and sv_password in clear text. Nothing is uploaded from this page, but do not paste it anywhere public. The tool blanks both before showing anything back.

In garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg on the server.

Whatever the server printed from launch to "map loaded", plus the command you started it with.

Would rather skip the port forwarding entirely? Supercraft runs Garry's Mod servers on a public address with the ports already open, so the only thing left to decide is the gamemode.

Frequently asked questions

Why can only I connect to my Garry's Mod server?

Almost always sv_lan. With sv_lan 1 the server never talks to Steam's master servers, so it is reachable from your own network and invisible to everyone else. It has to be sv_lan 0, and the change only takes effect on a restart, not on a map change.

Why is my Garry's Mod server not in the server browser?

Three causes account for nearly all of it: sv_lan is 1, the UDP game port and the query port immediately above it are not both reachable from outside, or the server has no Game Server Login Token. A server without a token still runs and can still be joined directly, but it is not listed publicly.

Which ports does a Garry's Mod server need?

The game port on UDP, by default 27015, and the query port immediately above it. Both must be open inbound. The query port is what answers the server browser, so a server that players can join by IP but which never appears in the list usually has the game port open and the query port closed.

What is a GSLT and do I need one?

A Game Server Login Token ties the server to a Steam account so it can be listed publicly. Without one the server boots and works, but stays off the public list. Tokens are free from Steam's Game Server Account Management page using app ID 4000.
